History#

This project started as a pastime in 2009 by a single developer and was originally named Biomechanical ToolKit (BTK). It began as a need of the SOFAMEA (Société Francophone d'Analyse du Mouvement chez l'Enfant et l'Adulte) to help people in the domain of clinical gait analysis. The main goal was to provide tools to facilitate data sharing and data processing between gait laboratories.

Until 2015, the project received several major updates focused on the integration of file formats, data container, and data visualization. Starting in 2013, another major improvement was in development: the possibility to create biomechanical models and compute joint kinematics and kinetics! However, the core of the library was not well adapted to receive such feature.

In 2015, the core of the project was completely rewritten (new concepts, new data structure, new way to process data). Moreover, to ensure the sustainability of the project, the company Solution Moveck Inc. took the ownership of the project. The project is still open-source, but compared to previously, the company offers higher quality services and support than a single developer in his spare time can offer.

License#

OpenMA use the generous open-source New BSD License (also known as the BSD 3-clause license, Revised BSD License, or Modified BSD License). This gives you the possibility to integrates OpenMA in open-source and commercial products without the need to pay license fee or mention the fact that you use OpenMA.

This choice was made due to the field of applications of the project. Movement analysis is very specific to domains like biomechanics. The actors in this domain are composed of research laboratories and compagnies. Thus, we you would like to provide them a tool available for both without restrictions. They can take advantage of last advancements done (e.g. new published algorithms, new supported hardware) and improve their own project.
